Year-Round In-Person Positions
Program Manager
The ideal candidate has mid-level management experience in outdoor programs and can lead a seasonal team of up to 14 staff. At least two years in experiential education (e.g., guide, field staff, educator, sail trainer) and expertise in outdoor education, recreation management, experiential learning, or a related field are required.
Voyage Guides
Voyage Guides must demonstrate a desire to lead youth and adolescent passengers through the challenges of weeklong coastal voyages. Guides must facilitate a positive learning environment and role model problem-solving, conflict resolution, tolerance for adversity, and group management skills. While prior sailing experience is not required, the desire to teach and learn social-emotional skills and the arts of traditional sailing is necessary.
Bosun
The Bosun is a competent mariner who takes responsibility and ownership of the vessel’s maintenance. The Bosun must be able to lead other Voyage Guides through rigging and work projects while also demonstrating a strong ability to work with youth. Prior sailing, leadership, carpentry, and rigging experience are preferred, though not necessary to apply.
First Mate
As the second in command of Shenandoah, the First Mate must demonstrate sound judgment and decision-making skills throughout her employment with Ocean Academy. The ability to role model is vital. The Mate must balance competence and authority while showing humility and a desire to learn. Leadership, facilitation, and sailing skills are required.
Chef
Ocean Academy seeks an organized, enthusiastic, and full-time chef to plan, prepare, and execute meals for up to 40 people. The chef will live aboard Shenandoah, working with a team of 9 staff. With the help of an assistant, they will prepare three meals/day, 5 days/week. Generous salary and a paid week off included. Must love adventure.
Captain
Ocean Academy seeks committed candidates for a multi-year training program to become Captain aboard Shenandoah. Applicants must complete one season as First Mate or Captain-in-Training and have strong leadership, facilitation, and sailing skills. A minimum U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Inland Master’s License is required.
Fleet Manager
The ideal candidate for this role brings substantial maritime trade experience and strong project management and leadership skills. A minimum of two years working as a captain, engineer, rigger, shipyard manager, or in a related maritime career is required. Relevant licensing and certifications will also be taken into consideration.
